On April 10, 2016, 26-year-old Raymond "RJ" Pantoja, a Hispanic male, was fatally shot outside a nightclub in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood. The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. near the intersection of B Street and Allegheny Avenue. Raymond became involved in a physical altercation between two groups that had spilled out from the club onto the street. During the confrontation, an individual approached Raymond, pressed a 9mm handgun to his chest, and fired a fatal shot.
He was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Raymond, known to his friends and family as "RJ," was an aspiring rapper who performed under the stage name "Hommi." He was also a father to an 8-year-old daughter named Joanna. His mother, Lisa Espinosa, described him as her "lifesaver," noting that his birth inspired her to overcome a five-year struggle with drug addiction. RJ was known for his affectionate nature, often telling loved ones, "If no one told you I love you today, I love you." He had a passion for music, basketball, and spending time with his family.
In the months following Raymond's death, no immediate arrests were made, and the case remained unsolved. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Lisa Espinosa took matters into her own hands. She distributed flyers, attended anti-violence rallies, and made public appeals for information. Her persistence eventually led a key witness to come forward, providing crucial information to the authorities. This breakthrough resulted in the arrest of 30-year-old Giovanny Perales on October 26, 2016. Perales, a known drug dealer from the Harrowgate neighborhood, was charged with Raymond's murder and related offenses. He was apprehended at his home, where police also discovered multiple firearms and a significant quantity of crack cocaine.
In 2019, Giovanny Perales pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and was sentenced to 14 to 28 years in prison, followed by five years of probation. Lisa Espinosa expressed dissatisfaction with the sentence, feeling that it did not equate to the life taken from her family. Since her son's death, she has become an advocate against gun violence, working to support other families affected by similar tragedies and striving to ensure that Raymond's legacy endures.
