Shannon Abdul-Rahim, 29, a Black/African American man, was killed on the evening of January 4, 2017, in West Philadelphia. Police and later federal authorities tied the killing to the 5800 block of West Thompson Street, in the area of Carroll Park, only a short distance from where Abdul-Rahim lived. Online memorial and news accounts identified him as one of the people lost to gun violence in Philadelphia that day.
The case began as a shooting investigation after Abdul-Rahim was found
suffering from a gunshot wound. Reports from the time described the wound as being to the neck. The circumstances later outlined by authorities said the shooting followed a verbal argument. After the gunfire, the shooter fled, leaving Abdul-Rahim mortally wounded and turning a dispute in a West Philadelphia neighborhood into a homicide case.
Investigators with the Philadelphia Homicide Unit eventually focused on Khadir Shareef Blue as the suspect. A murder warrant was issued for Blue on January 18, 2017, about two weeks after Abdul-Rahim was killed. Police accused Blue of fatally shooting Abdul-Rahim inside or near Carroll Park, and authorities said Blue was known to frequent West Philadelphia and Delaware County. At the time he was being sought, police described him as about 5 feet 11 inches tall, 185 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
For more than two years, Blue remained wanted. His case was referred to the Eastern Pennsylvania U.S. Marshals Violent Crime Fugitive Task Force, and in September 2018 he was placed on Pennsylvania State Police's Ten Most Wanted list. That public listing marked him as a fugitive wanted by Philadelphia police for a 2017 homicide, keeping Abdul-Rahim's case active beyond the initial investigation.
Blue was arrested on December 3, 2019, in Chester, Pennsylvania. U.S. Marshals said the arrest came after an anonymous tip led investigators to a residence on the 2900 block of West 12th Street. When marshals and local officers surrounded the home and announced themselves, Blue reportedly tried to escape by jumping from a rear window, but investigators outside challenged him. Officers then entered the house, and after a brief struggle, Blue was taken into custody. Investigators also recovered a loaded semi-automatic. 45-caliber handgun from the scene.
Authorities said Blue was arrested for murder and Pennsylvania state parole violations in connection with Abdul-Rahim's death.
