In the early morning hours of February 5, 2017, the life of 28-year-old Donald G. 'Donnie' Ketter Jr., a Caucasian male from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was tragically cut short. The fatal encounter unfolded outside the Carrick Lit Club, a members-only establishment. Ketter was leaving the club when he had a brief and fateful altercation with another man.
The man, later identified as 37-year-old Derek Vasos, was a passenger in an Uber that had been summoned to the club.
From the front passenger seat of the vehicle, Vasos fired a single shot that struck Ketter in the chest. Following the shooting, Vasos ordered the frightened Uber driver to leave the scene. As they drove, he disassembled the handgun. After being dropped off, Vasos menacingly asked the driver what they had seen and made a throat-slitting gesture, a threat that led the driver to immediately flag down a police officer.
Responding to the sound of a gunshot, police found Ketter lying on Copperfield Avenue. He was rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. An investigation quickly led to the arrest of Vasos, who was charged with homicide, intimidating a witness, and making threats.
During the trial, Vasos claimed he acted in self-defense, testifying that he was 'scared to death' and that Ketter had aggressively approached the Uber with a belt wrapped around his hand. He argued that he fired his weapon in fear for his life. However, prosecutors presented a different narrative, and after deliberating for just under four hours, the jury rejected the self-defense claim. They found Derek Vasos guilty of third-degree murder. The legal proceedings also saw a controversial moment when a judge initially granted Vasos bail and release on electronic home monitoring, a decision that was later reversed by a higher court following an emergency petition from the District Attorney's office. Ultimately, Vasos was sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison, followed by 10 years of probation for the shooting death of Donald Ketter Jr.
