In the winter of 2018, the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, was shaken by a brutal act of violence that claimed the lives of four young men. Among them was Nelson Onofre, a 23-year-old Hispanic male. On the night of January 28th, Onofre, along with Jarlyn Lantigua-Tejada, 20, Juan Rodriguez, 23, and Joshua Santos, 20, were fatally shot multiple times inside a first-floor apartment in a row home on South Third Street.
The cold-blooded nature of the killings sent a wave of fear and uncertainty through the community as the motive behind the quadruple homicide was initially unknown.
An intensive investigation was launched by local and federal law enforcement agencies, which soon pointed to the involvement of a notorious drug trafficking organization known as the 'Trinidad Gang.' Investigators uncovered that this violent gang was deeply entrenched in the distribution of drugs in the Reading area and frequently employed violence to assert their dominance and control their territory. The quadruple homicide was believed to be a direct result of the gang's illicit activities, a violent confrontation with others involved in the narcotics trade.
In October 2019, a significant breakthrough was made in the case when ten members of the Trinidad Gang were indicted on a multitude of charges, including the murders of Onofre and the other three victims. The extensive list of charges also included kidnapping, drug distribution, and various firearms offenses, painting a grim picture of the gang's criminal enterprise. The indictments were the culmination of a years-long investigation that aimed to dismantle the violent drug trafficking network that had terrorized the community.
The wheels of justice continued to turn, and in April 2021, a key fugitive in the case, Pedro Sanchez-Laporte, was apprehended in Florida by the FBI and extradited to Pennsylvania to face charges. By October 2022, several members of the Trinidad Gang, including its leader, Jesus Feliciano-Trinidad, were convicted of federal murder and weapons charges. Subsequently, Feliciano-Trinidad, along with Dewayne Quinones and Mayco Alvarez-Jackson, were sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the quadruple homicide and other violent crimes. Another defendant, Pedro Sanchez-Laporte, received a sentence of 198 months' imprisonment to be followed by five years of supervised release, bringing a measure of closure to the families of the victims and the community at large.
