In a tragic turn of events on April 10, 2018, a dispute that began over a basketball game escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 26-year-old Eric Brown, a Black/African American male from West Chester, Pennsylvania. The incident unfolded inside the Star Social Club on East Market Street, where Brown had sought refuge after an initial altercation.
Following a basketball game at nearby West Chester University, an argument erupted between Brown and two brothers, Tyrell and Timothy 'TJ' Jacobs. The confrontation quickly turned violent, with Tyrell Jacobs throwing a punch at Brown. Patrons at the club intervened, but the aggression from the Jacobs brothers continued. They pursued Brown, who was unarmed, around the bar and pool tables, both brandishing firearms. Brown attempted to escape through a back door, but found himself trapped in a small, locked room. It was there that Tyrell Jacobs, with his brother Timothy standing guard at the door with his own gun drawn, shot Brown once in the chest. The entire incident, from the initial argument to the fatal shot, lasted less than ten minutes. Brown was transported to Paoli Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Brown's death was swift, aided by clear surveillance footage from the social club. The Chester County District Attorney's Office quickly identified Tyrell and Timothy Jacobs as the primary suspects, issuing warrants for their arrest on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy. Describing the act as a 'senseless murder' and an 'assassination,' law enforcement launched a search for the two brothers. On April 18, 2018, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force located and arrested the Jacobs brothers in Philadelphia. At the time of his arrest, Timothy Jacobs was found to be in possession of a gun.
The case proceeded to trial, where the compelling video evidence played a crucial role. In October 2019, a jury found Tyrell Jacobs, then 24, guilty of first-degree murder for firing the shot that killed Eric Brown. His older brother, Timothy Jacobs, then 25, was convicted of third-degree murder for his participation in the crime. Sentencing followed in February 2020. Tyrell Jacobs received a mandatory life sentence in prison. Timothy Jacobs was sentenced to 31 to 62 years in prison for his role in the murder.
