In the winter of 1996, a tragic series of events in Saint Louis, Missouri, led to the death of an infant girl named Diamond Taylor. Her life was tragically cut short before it ever truly had a chance to begin. Diamond was born prematurely on February 29, 1996, through an emergency C-section after her 15-year-old mother, Kyunia Taylor, was fatally shot while six months pregnant.
The shooting occurred on a school bus, where a 30-year-old teacher named Mark Boyd, who was accused of being
the father of Kyunia's unborn child, opened fire. Boyd shot the bus driver three times and Kyunia six times. Kyunia Taylor succumbed to her injuries, but medical professionals were able to deliver her baby, Diamond. Born at just three pounds, Diamond fought for her life but ultimately passed away on March 23, 1996, due to brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen during the traumatic birth.
The investigation into the deaths of Kyunia and Diamond Taylor was complex. Initially, two other men, Michael Durley and Randy Wilkes, provided multiple confessions, some of which were videotaped, implicating themselves in the shooting. However, they later recanted these statements. Ultimately, the evidence led back to Mark Boyd. He was convicted on two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action for the deaths of both Kyunia and her infant daughter, Diamond.
