Just before midnight, around 11:40 p.m., authorities arrived to find an 11-year-old female named Charnija Keys suffering from a critical gunshot wound to the head.
The young girl, who had been inside her own home when the shooting occurred, was immediately transported by emergency responders to a local hospital for urgent medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

Known affectionately as 'Chuckie' by her friends and family, Charnija was a student at Carver Elementary School and was described as a goofy and lovable child who was popular in her neighborhood. She was part of a large family, leaving behind two older sisters, three younger sisters, and a baby brother, with another sibling on the way at the time of her death. The loss sent shockwaves through the community, with friends remembering her as a playful spirit who left a lasting impression on those who knew her.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities struggled to identify a suspect. St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden publicly described the case as a full-scale investigation, urging the community to come forward with any information that could lead to an arrest.
