In a quiet neighborhood in West Whiteland Township, Pennsylvania, a deeply troubling event unfolded, ending in the tragic death of 7-year-old Sharvil Deepak Kulkarni, his 14-year-old brother Shubham, and their 47-year-old mother, Arti Adya Kulkarni. The family of Indian descent was discovered on Sunday, January 24, 2021, in the basement of their home on Mountain View Drive. All four members of the Kulkarni family, including the patriarch, 50-year-old Deepak Kulkarni, had succumbed to gunshot wounds in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide.
The grim discovery was made after concerned relatives from New Jersey were unable to contact the family for several days. After their knocks went unanswered, they alerted the West Whiteland Township Police. Officers gained entry into the family's townhouse and found the deceased in the basement. The Chester County Coroner's Office confirmed that all four individuals died from gunshot wounds.
Investigations into the incident suggest that Deepak Kulkarni was the perpetrator. Law enforcement sources revealed that he had purchased a handgun just two weeks before the tragic event. While the motive remains unclear, neighbors reported that Deepak, who usually took daily walks and was known to be friendly, had not seemed like his usual self in the days leading up to the incident. Arti Kulkarni's brother also noted that in the months prior, plans to get together were often canceled at the last minute by Deepak.
Deepak Kulkarni worked as a software analyst, and his wife, Arti, was an application developer. Their two sons, Shubham and Sharvil, were students at Collegium Charter School. The community was left in shock by the event, with the Chester County District Attorney calling it a 'tragedy beyond comprehension.'
