On a summer evening in Philadelphia, what began as a family barbecue ended in a senseless tragedy that claimed the life of 40-year-old Richard Jackson. The incident, which took place on July 15, 2018, was sparked by a piece of fatherly advice. Jackson, a devoted father of six and a skilled construction worker, had encouraged the new boyfriend of his stepdaughter to find a legitimate job and stop selling drugs, especially now that he was a father himself.
This well-intentioned guidance, however, was not well-received.
The man, Marcus Burns, and his brother, Daryl Burns, took offense to Jackson's words. The verbal disagreement at the barbecue in Grays Ferry quickly escalated into a physical altercation, with Daryl Burns fighting Jackson. After the brothers were asked to leave the gathering, Jackson returned to his home in the West Passyunk neighborhood to calm down. Later that evening, his life was cut short when he answered a knock at his front door. On his doorstep stood Daryl Burns, who proceeded to shoot Jackson once in the chest before calmly walking away. Jackson was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
For more than a year, Daryl Burns managed to evade capture, but he was eventually apprehended in July 2019. The subsequent investigation and trial relied heavily on the testimony of witnesses who came forward to share what they had seen. Their cooperation was instrumental in piecing together the events of that fateful day. Surveillance footage also played a role in placing Burns at the scene of the crime. The evidence presented a clear picture of a dispute that tragically escalated to murder.
In June 2022, a jury found Daryl Burns guilty of first-degree murder and related charges. For his crime, he was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. While the conviction brought a measure of justice for Richard Jackson's family, it could not fill the void left by the loss of a man remembered by his loved ones as a dedicated father, a hardworking provider, and a caring friend who was not just a father to his own children, but to many others in his community.
