In the early morning hours of May 4, 2025, the life of 20-year-old Maximino Martínez Vazquez was tragically cut short on a street in North Philadelphia. A Hispanic male born in Puebla, México, he had come to the United States with his younger brother in search of better opportunities after their father's death. Described as a humble, loving, and hardworking individual, Martínez Vazquez had dedicated himself to a career as a restaurateur.
His warmth and kindness were qualities that his colleagues greatly appreciated.
On that fateful morning, at approximately 7:07 a.m., law enforcement responded to a call on West Venango Street. There, they discovered Martínez Vazquez suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene just a few minutes later at around 7:15 a.m. The horrific event was witnessed by his brother and uncle, adding another layer of tragedy to the family's profound loss. His family later revealed that there had been previous conflicts with the man who would be accused of his murder, and that the man had insulted Martínez Vazquez because of his Mexican heritage.
The investigation into the shooting led to a swift arrest. On May 6, 2025, Philadelphia police took 49-year-old Alexander Marquez into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder and other related offenses and was held without bail. Following his death, Martínez Vazquez's family and friends gathered for a visitation and memorial service to honor his memory in Philadelphia before he was laid to rest in his hometown of Puebla, Mexico.
