As the executive chef and co-owner of the recently opened Black Seed Cafe, he was a rising star in the city's culinary scene, known for his creative dishes and his desire to bring people together through food. On February 6, 2020, just before 6 a.m., he arrived in his black Honda Accord at his restaurant located at the intersection of 24th and Federal Streets in the Point Breeze neighborhood. It was a routine he followed daily, but this morning would be tragically different.
As he sat in his car outside the cafe, the quiet morning was shattered by the sound of multiple gunshots. Struck by gunfire, Flippen's car moved forward, crashing into a parked vehicle. A nearby resident, awakened by the shots and the subsequent crash, looked out to see the chef slumped over in the driver's seat. When police responded to the scene, they found Flippen suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, but his injuries were too severe.
