Isiaka Meite, a 24-year-old man of African descent, tragically lost his life on June 16, 2019, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was fatally shot in the back during a high school graduation party held at Paschall Playground on the 6900 block of Reedbird Place. The incident occurred around 10:08 p.m., when a group of three Black males opened fire indiscriminately into the crowd of approximately 75 people.
Meite was among six victims who were shot, with the others sustaining injuries to their legs and ankles. Despite being rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Meite succumbed to his injuries shortly after the shooting.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was not preceded by any altercation. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross stated that the shooter or shooters appeared to have targeted the gathering with the knowledge that Meite would be present. The suspects fled the scene in a newer model silver Nissan Rogue, evading police pursuit. The case remains unsolved, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. The Philadelphia Police Department continues to seek tips and information from the public to bring those responsible to justice.
