On a cold Christmas Eve in 2019, the life of 19-year-old Maalik Jones, a Black male from Yeadon, Pennsylvania, was tragically cut short in a violent shooting. The evening of Tuesday, December 24th, found Jones behind the wheel of a white Ford, driving along the 2600 block of Carroll Street in Philadelphia. At approximately 9:00 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the night, and Jones was struck.
Inside the car with Jones was a 20-year-old woman who also fell victim to the unexpected
violence, suffering a gunshot wound to her leg. In the chaotic moments that followed the shooting, the white Ford crashed. When Philadelphia Police officers responded to the scene, they discovered Jones inside the wrecked vehicle. He was immediately transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died later that evening.
