On June 5, 1986, Daniel Thomas Gleason, a 38-year-old male police officer with the Philadelphia Police Department, was fatally shot while responding to a vandalism report on West Sedgley Avenue near North Broad Street. Officer Gleason and his partner approached two individuals standing nearby to inquire about the incident. One of the individuals, later identified as Nathan Long, drew a handgun and opened fire, striking Officer Gleason multiple times in the face and arm.
