On the evening of October 4, 2018, 15-year-old Rasul Benson, a Black male, was at a Gulf gas station at 25th Street and Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia with two friends. The teenagers were pumping gas for tips when a white sedan pulled into the station. A person emerged from the car and began chasing one of Benson's friends through the parking lot while a second individual fired a gun from the backseat of the vehicle.
In the ensuing chaos, at least 16 shots were fired, striking all three boys. Rasul Benson was hit in the chest and rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His two friends were also wounded but survived.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that it was not a random act of violence but rather a targeted attack rooted in an ongoing and violent feud between rival street groups from the 31st Street, 27th Street, and Wilson Park areas of Philadelphia. Authorities determined that Rasul Benson was not a member of any of these groups but was friends with individuals who were. He was an unintended victim, caught in the crossfire of a conflict that had already resulted in numerous shootings and several deaths. For more than a year, the case remained unsolved, leaving Benson's family grappling with their loss and the absence of justice.
A breakthrough in the investigation came when a man associated with the 31st Street group, Nyseem Smith, began cooperating with police. Smith informed investigators that Hanef Wilkins and Yameen Mofield, also aligned with the 31st Street group, had confessed to him their involvement in the shooting shortly after it occurred. Smith's testimony became the cornerstone of the prosecution's case. In June 2023, after a 10-day trial that included Smith's testimony, surveillance footage, and other forensic evidence, Hanef Wilkins, then 22, and Yameen Mofield, then 21, were convicted of third-degree murder, conspiracy, and related charges. In October 2023, both men were sentenced to 45 to 90 years in prison, bringing a measure of closure to the family of Rasul Benson nearly five years after his death.
