In the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 4, 2023, the vibrant energy of Philadelphia's Chinatown was shattered by a single gunshot that would ultimately claim the life of 38-year-old John Hershock, a well-known local DJ. A White male, Hershock was discovered in a narrow alleyway behind the Tango nightclub on Appletree Street at approximately 3:12 a.m. by responding Philadelphia Police officers.
He was suffering from a critical gunshot wound to the head.
Friends of Hershock later recounted that they had been at the nightclub with him just moments before the shooting. As they remained near the entrance, Hershock walked toward Appletree Street. An argument was heard, followed by the fatal shot. Witnesses reported seeing a group of individuals, possibly juveniles, fleeing the scene on foot immediately after the incident. Though police indicated that there was some sort of dispute happening outside the club that night, they did not believe Hershock was involved.
Urgently, the officers transported Hershock to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. He was placed on life support, but his injuries were described by authorities as 'non-survivable.' Despite the efforts of medical staff, John Hershock succumbed to his injuries on Friday, October 6, 2023. In the wake of his death, his family made the decision to donate his organs, a final act of generosity from a man described as having a big heart.
In the days and months that followed, the Philadelphia Police Department has been actively investigating the homicide. Detectives have been interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from the area in the hopes of identifying those responsible for Hershock's death. While police expressed hope that an arrest would be made soon after the shooting, as of the latest reports, no arrests have been made and the identities of any suspects remain unknown. The case remains an unsolved murder, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward.
