In the early morning hours of December 8, 2018, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, a tragic incident cut short the life of 15-year-old Zachary 'Zach' Mulford. The young man, a sophomore at Agora Cyber Charter School, was visiting friends at a residence on North Liberty Street with another friend. What was meant to be a social gathering turned into a scene of devastating loss.
When Zachary and his friend arrived at the house at approximately 1:36 a.m. and knocked on the door, they were met by 19-year-old Kyle Harris, who was holding a gun. Harris, recognizing his friends, lowered the weapon and allowed them inside. In what authorities have described as a terribly misguided attempt to make the firearm safe, Harris began to remove the magazine and clear the chamber. During this process, the gun discharged, and a single bullet struck Zachary. A friend who was present attempted to render aid and perform CPR, but the wound was fatal, and Zachary was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath, a panicked Harris fled the residence. However, his flight from the law was short-lived, as he later turned himself in to the New Castle Police Department. He cooperated with investigators, providing a statement that was consistent with the account of the witness at the scene and leading them to the location of the discarded firearm. The subsequent investigation revealed that the gun used in the unintentional shooting had been reported as stolen.
Following his surrender, Kyle Harris was arrested and faced a series of serious charges in connection with Zachary Mulford's death. The Lawrence County authorities charged him with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and receiving stolen property. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man who was remembered by his family as a good kid with a bright future. His mother tearfully recalled his passion for robotics, a field he had hoped to pursue in college, and his role as a beloved brother to his six siblings.
