Shauna Nichelle Cameron, a 31-year-old woman from Dayton, Ohio, tragically lost her life on May 8, 2022. Shauna was a beloved daughter, sister, and friend who was known for her sweet and loving nature. She was deeply loved by her family and friends, and she often volunteered at a local soup kitchen. Shauna was also studying to become a nurse assistant at Ross Medical Education Center in Dayton.
Shauna's death was the result of a senseless act of gun violence.
She was a passenger in a Chevrolet Impala traveling east on U.S. 35 in Riverside near the Woodman Drive exit when Jamar Allen Hayes, a 27-year-old man from Dayton, fired at least twice at the car. Shauna was fatally injured and taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The other two occupants of the car were not hurt.
Following Shauna's death, Jamar Allen Hayes was arrested and charged with murder. He faced multiple charges, including two counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, one count of discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises, and several counts of intimidation of a crime victim or witness. Hayes claimed self-defense, but the court found him guilty on all counts. In November 2023, Hayes was sentenced to 45-50½ years in prison.
Shauna's mother, Stacy Cameron, has been vocal about her daughter's case and has called for changes to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future. She described Shauna as her best friend and shared how deeply her absence has affected their family. Shauna's legacy lives on through the memories and love of those who knew her.
