Daniel A. Carpenter, a 42-year-old Black / African American male from Pittsburgh, was caught in the middle of violence on the afternoon of March 17, 2019, in the city’s Larimer neighborhood. Police were called to the area of Shetland Street and Victor Way after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Carpenter inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck.
The scene unfolded in daylight, with neighbors and witnesses coming out of their homes as police and
emergency crews arrived. One witness described seeing a shooter fire toward the man in the car and said several shots were fired. The same witness said Carpenter’s son was on the other side of the car, adding an especially painful detail to an already devastating scene. Another person nearby tried to help Carpenter before medics arrived, using a shirt in an effort to stop the bleeding.
Carpenter was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. Although the shooting happened on March 17, online news reports and obituary-related records indicate that he died from his injuries the following day, March 18, 2019. In the immediate aftermath, police said the investigation had just begun and asked witnesses to come forward. Investigators also hoped that a camera near the intersection of Shetland and Lowell Streets might help them determine what happened.
For more than a year after the shooting, the case remained under investigation. In June 2020, Pittsburgh Police announced that detectives with the Violent Crime Unit had made an arrest. Isaiah Evans, then 22, of Pittsburgh’s East End, was taken into custody in connection with Carpenter’s death. Police said Evans was accused of shooting Carpenter while Carpenter was inside the vehicle on Shetland Street.
Evans was charged with criminal homicide, and police also said he faced gun-related charges. Online reports identified him as the suspect arrested in the case, but the available news accounts reviewed did not provide a reported motive, did not identify additional suspects, and did not include final details on a trial outcome, plea, conviction, or sentencing.
