In what appeared to be a setup, Nana Yaw Opoku, a 33-year-old Ghanaian man, was shot and killed inside his Southwest Philadelphia apartment on the evening of April 18, 2019. Known to his friends as Junior US, Opoku was at his residence on Lindbergh Boulevard when the fatal events unfolded. He was in the company of three women when a knock came at the door.
Surveillance footage from that night captured one of the women opening the door.
As Opoku approached to see who was there, two men dressed in black hoodies forced their way into the apartment. They opened fire, shooting Opoku in the chest. After the shooting, the two male assailants and the three women who had been inside with Opoku fled the scene together in a gray Chevrolet Malibu.
The investigation into the death of Nana Opoku led to the arrest of four individuals between May and July of 2019. The suspects were identified as 16-year-old Christina Zogar, 20-year-old Tejan Sherif, 21-year-old Abdoulaye Doucoure, and 22-year-old Alfred Bargor. All four were subsequently charged with murder, robbery, criminal conspiracy, and other related offenses.
Following his death, Opoku’s body was flown back to his home country of Ghana for his final funeral rites, which were held in a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
