In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Pittsburgh's Sheraden neighborhood, the sound of gunfire shattered the calm. Responding to reports of shots fired shortly before midnight on May 29, 2019, police discovered a man lying in the 3100 block of Chartiers Avenue. The man, identified as 35-year-old Richard Lee Greene of Pittsburgh, had sustained gunshot wounds to his head and torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His death was swiftly ruled a homicide by the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.
Investigations into the shooting revealed that Richard Lee Greene, a male, had been leaving Craig's Bar on Chartiers Avenue with a friend when an unknown man approached him. It was at that moment that the assailant opened fire, fatally wounding Greene. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials began their investigation, but no arrests were made.
As the investigation continued, police acknowledged that there were several witnesses to the shooting. In an effort to encourage individuals to come forward with information, a reward was later offered by Crimestoppers. Despite these efforts and the presence of witnesses, reports in the months following the incident did not indicate that any suspects had been publicly identified or taken into custody in connection with the murder of Richard Lee Greene. Homicide detectives with the Pittsburgh Police continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
