Mager Rainey, a 22-year-old male of African American ethnicity from Homewood, Pittsburgh, PA, was tragically shot and killed on October 20, 2019. Rainey was visiting a house near Rebecca Avenue and Jeannette Street when a red Nissan Titan pickup truck pulled up, and two individuals began firing at him. Police recovered seven .45-caliber and 14 .40-caliber casings from the scene.
The investigation into Rainey's death revealed that Jeremiah Ligon, Herbert Lee Walker III, and Kenya Harper
were involved in the crime. Ligon and Walker had placed a tracking device on Rainey's vehicle weeks before the shooting, and Ligon used an app on his phone to monitor Rainey's movements. On August 29, 2024, Ligon and Walker both pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and conspiracy. Harper, who provided one of the guns used in the shooting, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and conspiracy.
Ligon was sentenced to 14 to 34 years in state prison, while Walker received a sentence of 15 to 37 years. Harper was sentenced to one to two years in incarceration, followed by three years of probation. The court heard testimonies from Ligon's former basketball coaches, who described him as respectful and courteous on the court, contrasting sharply with his involvement in the crime.
