In a quiet West Philadelphia home in October 2019, a tragedy unfolded that would claim the lives of four family members. Leslie Holmes, a 56-year-old man, was found deceased inside his residence on Walton Avenue, the victim of a horrific act of violence that also took the life of his wife, Janet Woodson, 51, and their two sons, 18-year-old Sy-eed Woodson and 7-year-old Leslie Woodson-Holmes.
The grim discovery was made after the couple failed to show up for their jobs at a local nursing home, prompting concerned coworkers to request a welfare check.
When police arrived at the house, they were met with silence. Unable to get an answer at the door, officers used a ladder to enter through a second-floor window. Inside, they found a disturbing scene. Maurice Louis, Woodson's 29-year-old son and Holmes's stepson, was discovered naked in a room, drinking from a bottle of vodka with a rifle on the floor nearby. Upon being found, Louis confessed to the killings, telling the officers that he had killed his family members. The victims were found in different parts of the house, each having suffered catastrophic gunshot wounds to the head. Investigators determined the weapon used was a shotgun that Louis had purchased just the day before the killings.
The investigation that followed revealed a history of mental health struggles for Maurice Louis. Family members reported that he had been diagnosed with depression, and court proceedings later confirmed a diagnosis of schizophrenia. It was revealed that his mother had previously sought help for his mental health issues, including an involuntary commitment in 2018. Following the murders, Louis was arrested and charged with four counts of criminal homicide. In January 2023, he pleaded guilty to four counts of third-degree murder and faces a sentence of 40 to 80 years in prison.
The case also led to a significant civil lawsuit. The estates of the victims filed a lawsuit against Horizon Health Management, a healthcare company, and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, alleging that their negligence contributed to the deaths. The lawsuit claimed that after Louis was involuntarily committed in 2018, the proper paperwork that would have prevented him from legally purchasing the shotgun was not submitted. In April 2026, a jury found Horizon Health Management liable and ordered them to pay over $18 million in damages to the families of Leslie Holmes and his loved ones. Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital had previously settled their portion of the lawsuit.
