Nicholas Troxell, a 41-year-old man from Philadelphia, PA, tragically lost his life on March 30, 2020. Troxell, who was known for his artistic talent in street graffiti art, was sleeping on a SEPTA train when he was attacked by a group of young men. The incident began when Tahmir Banks, 24, and his peers boarded the train and started harassing Troxell. Banks and his friends slapped Troxell, prompting him to chase them away.
However, Banks returned with a firearm and shot Troxell in the forehead, causing him to bleed out and die shortly after at Temple Hospital.
Following the incident, investigators reviewed surveillance footage and identified Banks as the shooter. Banks was arrested approximately two weeks later and admitted to the crime during interrogation. He was charged with third-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm. In May 2023, Banks pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 21 to 42 years in prison.
The case highlighted the vulnerability of marginalized individuals in society and the importance of seeking justice for all residents, regardless of their circumstances. Assistant District Attorney Erica Rebstock and Philadelphia Police Department Homicide Detectives Levi Morton and Michael Livewell played key roles in securing the conviction and ensuring that Banks was held accountable for his actions.
Troxell is remembered by his family as a loving grandfather, father, and brother who will be deeply missed. His death serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and justice in protecting vulnerable members of the community.
