On a cold February morning in 2021, a quiet street in Plains Township, a community near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, became the scene of a shocking and tragic event that would claim the lives of three people, including 48-year-old Lisa Goy. The dispute, which had been simmering between neighbors, erupted in violence over something as mundane as the removal of snow.
Lisa and her husband, James Goy, were clearing their car after a significant snowstorm, shoveling the snow across the street and onto the property of their neighbor, Jeffrey Spaide. This seemingly simple act was the catalyst for a deadly confrontation.
The argument began with a verbal exchange that quickly escalated. Spaide, a 47-year-old man, confronted the Goys about where they were putting the snow. The disagreement turned heated, with reports indicating that James Goy threw a tool he was using and approached Spaide in a threatening manner. In response, Spaide retreated into his home, but the shouting continued. He soon re-emerged with a handgun and began firing at the couple at close range. Both Lisa and James were struck and fell to the ground.
The horror did not end there. Spaide went back into his house and returned with an AR-style rifle, with which he shot the injured couple again. As police began to arrive at the scene, they heard a single gunshot from inside Spaide's residence. Upon entering the home, they found that the suspect had taken his own life. The investigation that followed confirmed that the incident was a murder-suicide, and as a result, no arrests were made. The case was considered closed by the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office. Lisa and James Goy left behind a 15-year-old son with autism, who was placed in the care of his grandparents.
