Jamil Mallory, a 32-year-old male from Lansdowne, PA, tragically died on April 8, 2021, from gunshot wounds sustained during a confrontation outside Jerry's Bar on East Baltimore Avenue in East Lansdowne. Mallory was a regular at the bar and was described by the bartender as a good kid. He was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. when Bruce Brown, a 56-year-old man from Philadelphia, arrived at the bar driving a company truck. Surveillance footage captured Brown arriving at the scene and engaging in a verbal altercation with Mallory. The argument escalated, and Brown pulled out a handgun, shooting Mallory once in the abdomen. As Mallory lay on the ground, Brown fired two more shots into his torso before leaving the scene.
Police responded to the report of the shooting and found Mallory suffering from three gunshot wounds. He was transported to Penn Presbyterian Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on April 13, 2021. Brown was identified as the suspect based on surveillance footage and witness testimonies. He was arrested four days later at his auto repair business, Car Care Auto Repair, where he had locked himself inside and had to be removed by a SWAT team.
Brown claimed that he shot Mallory in self-defense, believing that Mallory had a gun and intended to shoot him. However, witnesses confirmed that Mallory did not have a firearm on him. Brown was charged with criminal homicide, first- and third-degree murder, possession of an instrument of crime, and related weapons offenses. In August 2024, he was convicted of third-degree murder and firearms offenses and sentenced to 28½ to 57 years in prison.
The case highlighted the senseless nature of Mallory's death, which occurred over a dispute about an unpaid car repair bill. The judge described the killing as a "senseless taking of life without any justification" and imposed the maximum sentence on Brown.
