Elias Nassah was working as a security guard at the Days Inn near the Orange County Jail when the incident occurred. On the night of the shooting, Nassah was accompanied by his girlfriend. Around 11:22 p.m., Nassah heard a man, later identified as 23-year-old Michael Chinn Jr., banging on one of the motel room doors.
Nassah approached Chinn, and a brief struggle ensued, during which Nassah was shot multiple times. Despite returning to his car and informing his girlfriend that he had been shot, Nassah succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to Orlando Health hospital.
The investigation revealed that Chinn had been heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident. Chinn's girlfriend reported that he had lost his room key and was banging on the door to be let in. After the shooting, Chinn returned to his room and claimed that someone had pulled a gun on him. Detectives later found what appeared to be a handgun in Nassah's pocket, but it was determined to be an airsoft gun, which replicates an actual firearm. No firearm was found on Chinn or in his room.
Michael Chinn Jr. was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Elias Nassah. The case against Chinn proceeded through the legal system, with Chinn being held at the Orange County Jail.
