On February 7, 2024, what began as a verbal dispute between 42-year-old Canh Le and his 13-year-old niece, Nakayla, escalated into an unimaginable tragedy. Canh retrieved a semi-automatic pistol and opened fire on his family members inside their shared home on Lewis Avenue. His brother, 40-year-old Xuong Le, his sister-in-law, 37-year-old Britni McLaughlin-Le, and their daughters, 17-year-old Natalya and 13-year-old Nakayla, all died from gunshot wounds.
Amid the chaos, the children's grandparents, who also lived in the home, managed to escape and call 911, reporting that their son had shot his niece. As police arrived at the scene, Canh Le began shooting at them from the third floor of the residence, injuring two officers. Shortly after, he set the house on fire. The blaze engulfed the home, and it was in this inferno that young Xavier Le perished from smoke inhalation.
After extinguishing the fire, investigators sifted through the charred remains of the house, a process that took two days. They recovered the bodies of all six deceased family members. The children had to be identified using dental records. Canh Le, the suspect in this horrific event, was found to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the weapon was recovered alongside his remains. With the perpetrator deceased, the criminal investigation into the tragedy was closed.
