Zion Vaughan, an 18-year-old male from Lansdowne, PA, tragically died on December 8, 2016, from a gunshot wound to the upper abdomen. Vaughan was found lying face down in the street in the 800 block of Parmley Avenue in Yeadon, PA, and was later pronounced dead at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. The investigation revealed that Vaughan was in a "high drug area" and had been approached by two men looking to buy marijuana. Vaughan gave them his phone number and told them to call him back in about an hour. Surveillance footage from a nearby deli captured this interaction.
The case went cold until March 2020, when Rodney W. Gary, 25, of East Lansdowne, PA, was charged with third-degree murder and conspiracy to robbery in connection with Vaughan's death. Gary entered open guilty pleas in February 2023, admitting his involvement in the shooting. Gary's alleged accomplice, Kapri Drayton, is currently incarcerated in a New Jersey federal prison and is not scheduled for release until June 2027. The investigation into Drayton remains open.
Gary admitted that he knew a robbery was going to take place before the shooting and that he was with Drayton when they met Vaughan in the 800 block of Bullock Avenue. Drayton allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Vaughan during the course of the robbery. Vaughan's family members said that he played football for Penn Wood High School and aspired to be a professional football player.
The case highlights the tragic consequences of violence and the impact it has on families and communities. Vaughan's death robbed him of a bright future, and his family continues to seek justice for his loss.
