In what has been described as an 'unmitigated tragedy,' 40-year-old Xuong Le of Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, was killed on February 7, 2024. He died alongside his wife, Britni McLaughlin-Le, 37, and their three children: Natalya, 17, Nakayla, 13, and Xavier, 10. The family, who were of South Vietnamese descent, had built a life in the quiet Delaware County community.
The horrific events unfolded after an argument between Xuong's brother, 43-year-old Canh Le, and his 13-year-old niece,
Nakayla. Following the dispute, Canh retrieved a rifle and opened fire on his family members. The grandparents, who also lived in the home, were able to escape and call 911, with gunfire audible in the background of the call. When police arrived at the Lewis Avenue residence, they were met with gunfire from Canh Le, who was positioned on the third floor. Two police officers were struck by the gunfire but survived their injuries.
After shooting at the officers, Canh Le set the house on fire. The resulting blaze was so intense that it took days for investigators to sift through the wreckage and recover the remains of the family. Autopsies later revealed that Xuong Le, his wife Britni, and their two daughters, Natalya and Nakayla, all died from gunshot wounds. Their youngest son, Xavier, died from smoke inhalation.
The suspected gunman, Canh Le, was also found deceased in the home, having died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A rifle was recovered at the scene. Due to the severity of the fire, dental records and DNA were required to identify the victims. The motive for the devastating act remains unclear, as authorities have stated that Canh Le 'took the 'why' to his grave.' The investigation into the murder-suicide is now considered closed.
