Darin Hobdy, a 17-year-old male from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, tragically passed away on May 23, 2021. The motive behind the murder was linked to a burglary that occurred two days prior, where $30,000 in cash, a pound of marijuana, and an assault rifle were stolen from the apartment of one of the suspects.
Deontae Nalls, aged 24, and Daeshuan Eric Smith, aged 22, were arrested and charged with Darin's murder. During the trial, the prosecution presented video surveillance and cell phone records that placed both men at the crime scene. However, the defense argued that there was no forensic evidence directly linking their clients to the shooting. The trial ended with a split verdict, and both men avoided a retrial by entering new pleas. Nalls pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and was sentenced to 3½ to seven years in state prison, while Smith entered a no-contest plea to conspiracy to commit third-degree murder and received a sentence of 2½ to five years in state prison.
The case highlighted issues with the investigation, including the discovery of a gun used in the murder during a traffic stop months later, which the defense argued was a miscarriage of justice.
