In the early hours of a cold January morning in Pittsburgh, a dispute that began in a nightclub escalated into a fatal burst of violence, claiming the life of 22-year-old Joseph Adu-Marfo. The male victim, who was Black, was fatally wounded in a chaotic shootout outside a bar in the Brighton Heights neighborhood on January 4, 2015.
The tragic chain of events reportedly began with an argument between a woman named Briquel Good and her ex-girlfriend at a club in the Strip District.
The conflict, fueled by animosity, led to an agreement to settle their differences with a fistfight outside Mr. Jack's Neighborhood Bar on McClure Avenue. However, the planned confrontation took a deadly turn. When the ex-girlfriend arrived in a car with several other people, Good and Adu-Marfo approached the vehicle and began firing at it, according to police.
As the driver of the car sped away to escape the gunfire, an occupant in the vehicle returned fire. In the exchange of bullets, Adu-Marfo was struck. He was driven to Allegheny General Hospital by Good but ultimately succumbed to a gunshot wound to his lower extremities. Another individual from the car was also wounded during the shootout and sought treatment at a different hospital for a gunshot wound to the hand. When police arrived at the scene of the shooting, they found a pool of blood but no victim.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Briquel Good, then 29, was arrested and faced a number of serious charges, including homicide, attempted homicide, and aggravated assault. Investigators alleged that Adu-Marfo was caught in Good's line of fire as she shot at the departing vehicle. However, the homicide charge against Good was later dismissed by a judge. The court found that prosecutors had not presented enough evidence to prove that the fatal bullet had been fired from Good's weapon, particularly since someone in the other vehicle had also been shooting. Good still faced numerous other charges related to the incident.
