His sister remembered him as someone who made her feel safe. On that evening, September 30, 2021, Johnson was on the 5800 block of Trinity Street when a fight broke out between two women.
True to his nature, he stepped in to intervene.
It was in this act of mediation that David Johnson was shot multiple times. When Philadelphia Police officers responded to the call at approximately 8:10 p.m., they found him with several gunshot wounds. The officers transported him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died later that evening. His family was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a man they described as a genuine person who was deeply devoted to his family and his Muslim faith. His sister lamented that being a good person had cost him his life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Philadelphia police have been seeking information from the public to help solve the case. Despite there being many eyewitnesses to the fatal shooting, no one has come forward with information that has led to an arrest. A reward of up to $20,000 has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for David Johnson's death. The case remains unsolved, and there have been no suspects publicly identified or arrests made in connection with his murder.
