On a Sunday evening, November 7, 2021, in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, 28-year-old Shamecca Franklin, a Black female, was walking down the 800 block of East Willard Street. It was just after 5 p.m. when her life was tragically cut short. A man, who appeared to have been lying in wait, emerged from a corner and opened fire at point-blank range.
Shamecca was struck by multiple gunshots, including several to the head, and collapsed onto the street.
Philadelphia Police officers responded to the scene and found Shamecca with grievous injuries. They rushed her to Temple University Hospital, but she succumbed to her wounds and was pronounced dead that evening. The brutal and sudden violence left a community in shock and a family devastated. Shamecca was a mother to three young children, who were eight years, two years, and eight months old at the time of her death. Her mother, Fatima Johnson, publicly grieved the loss of her daughter and the profound impact it would have on her grandchildren.
Investigators believe the shooting was a premeditated act. Surveillance footage from the area captured images of the suspected gunman. He was described as a Black male in his early to mid-20s. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a distinctive reddish or rust-colored puffy jacket, a black-hooded sweatshirt with white markings on the hood, loose-fitting black pants, black shoes, and a black knit hat. After the shooting, the suspect was seen fleeing the area.
Despite the video evidence and public appeals for information, no arrests have been made in the murder of Shamecca Franklin. The Philadelphia Police Department continues to investigate the case and seeks help from the public to identify and locate the individual responsible for her death. A $20,000 reward has been offered for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case, as a family continues to wait for justice.
