On November 8, 2021, 18-year-old Hasson Shackelford, an African American male and senior at Sto-Rox High School in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, was tragically shot in the head while walking home from school. He was found with a gunshot wound to the head in the 700 block of Camp Street and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but unfortunately, he did not survive.
The incident prompted an immediate investigation by homicide detectives, who went door-to-door in the neighborhood to gather information. On November 16, 2021, 15-year-old Tavarius Lee of McKees Rocks was arrested and charged with criminal homicide and possession of a firearm by a minor in connection with Shackelford's death. Lee was taken into custody and held in the Allegheny County Jail.
The shooting had a profound impact on the community and the school, leading to the decision to move Sto-Rox Junior/Senior High School to virtual learning for the rest of the week to allow students and staff to process the tragedy. Counseling services were made available to support those affected by the loss.
Shackelford was remembered by his family and friends as a loving, caring, and intelligent young man with aspirations of attending college. His mother, Shateash Washington, described him as someone who always tried to do the right thing and had a bright future ahead of him.
