On an autumn afternoon in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, Brian Irby, a 35-year-old male, was fatally shot in the chest on October 7, 2021. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Fair Oaks Street. Emergency responders found Irby with a single gunshot wound and transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 5:15 p.m. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Irby's death led Allegheny County police to identify 29-year-old David Goodwine of McKees Rocks as the primary suspect. According to police reports, the shooting stemmed from a drug deal that had taken place at Irby's home earlier that day. A witness informed investigators that the perpetrator had robbed Irby during the transaction and fled the scene. Irby then reportedly contacted the individual, who agreed to return what he had stolen. However, upon his return, the man shot Irby.
Surveillance footage from a nearby residence played a crucial role in the investigation. The video captured an older model GMC Yukon, later identified as belonging to Goodwine, arriving at Irby's home. The footage showed an interaction between Irby and the occupant of the Yukon before the vehicle drove away. Later, the video showed the Yukon returning, followed by Irby in his own car. A struggle then ensued between Irby and the man identified as Goodwine, culminating in Irby falling to the ground after moving to the side of his vehicle. Cell phone records also placed Goodwine in the vicinity of Irby's home multiple times on the day of the shooting.
In late November 2021, Allegheny County police issued an arrest warrant for David Goodwine, charging him with criminal homicide and firearm violations. Shortly after the warrant was issued, Goodwine turned himself in to authorities at the Pittsburgh Municipal Court building.
