In the afternoon hours of a late autumn day, a violent altercation in downtown Reading, Pennsylvania, claimed the life of 30-year-old Leonard King Jr. The incident unfolded on Monday, November 22, 2021, at approximately 1:20 p.m. in the 500 block of Penn Street. An argument between King and another male escalated, tragically culminating in gunfire. King sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.
He was rushed to Reading Hospital for medical treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Reading Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division promptly launched a homicide investigation. According to police, the suspect, described at the time as a male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and gray sweatpants, was seen fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. Through their investigation, authorities were able to identify a suspect and obtain an arrest warrant.
The day after the fatal shooting, on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, members of the Reading Police Department located and apprehended the suspect without incident. Aeneas O'Brien, who was 19 years old at the time, was taken into custody inside a residence in the 1700 block of North 16th Street. He was subsequently transported to Berks County Central Processing and arraigned on charges of first-degree murder and third-degree murder, among other related offenses.
Following his arrest, Aeneas O'Brien's case proceeded through the legal system. He was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder for the death of Leonard King Jr. An appeal of the judgment of sentence was later filed, and in a memorandum dated August 21, 2024, the Superior Court of Pennsylvania affirmed the decision of the Berks County Court of Common Pleas, solidifying the conviction. The court documents from the appeal noted that the evidence presented showed a man wearing a black hoodie and a face mask approach, argue with, and then shoot Leonard Sylvester King, Jr.
