In the late afternoon of March 19, 2022, a violent encounter in the parking lot of the Berkshire Square shopping center in Wyomissing, a suburb of Reading, Pennsylvania, claimed the life of 34-year-old Alexi Omar Rodriguez Serra. A Hispanic male from Allentown, Rodriguez Serra was fatally shot in what authorities have described as a domestic-related incident.

The events of that day unfolded when Nehemias Santiago Montes, then 38, of York, arrived at the shopping center. Montes had been in a long-term relationship with a woman who was in the parking lot with Rodriguez Serra. Upon seeing them together, Montes allegedly ambushed the pair. In an attempt to escape the attack, Rodriguez Serra tried to flee in a Dodge Durango. However, he was shot multiple times and crashed the vehicle into a tree, where he succumbed to his injuries. The woman with him was also critically injured in the shooting but survived after undergoing emergency surgery for severe head injuries.

Immediately following the shooting, Montes surrendered to the police who had arrived at the scene. He reportedly admitted to the shooting and was taken into custody. An investigation into the incident revealed that the attack was premeditated, with Montes having tracked the woman to the shopping center.

Nehemias Santiago Montes was subsequently charged with a range of offenses, including first-degree murder, third-degree murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and carrying a firearm without a license. Ultimately, he was sentenced to 18 to 40 years in prison for third-degree murder. The tragic case brought the issue of domestic violence to the forefront, highlighting the devastating consequences that can arise from such disputes.
