On a Sunday evening in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, 36-year-old Darrius Waller, a father of five, was shot and killed in what authorities have described as a senseless act of violence stemming from a minor traffic incident. The man, popular and athletic within his community, was sitting in his red Jeep on the 500 block of North Evans Street at approximately 9:35 p.m. on December 5, 2021, when he was fatally wounded.
The investigation, a joint effort by the Pottstown Police and Montgomery County Detectives, quickly identified a suspect, 43-year-old Gerald Scott Ramos, who lived on the same street. According to authorities, Ramos had been walking home from his brother's house when he claimed Waller's Jeep sped past and nearly hit him. This encounter allegedly enraged Ramos, who then went to his apartment to 'cool down.' However, he instead retrieved his legally owned 9mm semi-automatic handgun and went back outside.
Surveillance footage captured the tragic events that followed. Ramos was seen approaching Waller's parked Jeep, which had its headlights on, from the rear. He walked directly to the driver's side door and fired eight shots into the vehicle, striking Waller multiple times. After the shooting, Ramos simply walked back to his nearby residence. Waller was transported to Pottstown Tower Health Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy later confirmed that he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
In the hours following the shooting, Ramos reportedly confessed to his brother, stating that he did it to 'stop the voices.' He was arrested without incident at his home by the Montgomery County SWAT-West Team in the early morning hours. Ramos, who was not acquainted with Waller prior to the incident, was charged with First-Degree Murder, Third-Degree Murder, and Possessing an Instrument of Crime.
