Joshua Smith, a 25-year-old male from Pottstown, PA, was tragically shot and killed on April 21, 2019. The incident occurred around 12:26 p.m. on the 600 block of Industrial Highway. An autopsy confirmed that Smith died from two gunshot wounds to his head and neck, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Following the shooting, Pottstown police began an investigation and discovered that Smith had been shot multiple times.
A joint investigation by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau and Pottstown Police revealed that Stephen Moore, a 31-year-old male from Pottstown, was involved in the incident. Moore was identified as the suspect and was charged with first-degree murder. An arrest warrant was issued for Moore, who was believed to have fled the scene in a silver Jeep.
The investigation uncovered that Moore and Smith had left Smith's residence together earlier in the day in the Jeep, which was later found crashed at the intersection of High and Wilson streets. Detectives recovered a Ruger .38 caliber pistol from the Jeep, which ballistics tests confirmed was used to shoot Smith. Moore was eventually arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
In May 2022, Stephen Moore was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. During the trial, Moore professed his innocence and claimed that he had no motive to kill Smith, whom he described as a friend. However, the jury found him guilty based on the evidence presented, including the recovered firearm and witness testimonies.
