In the afternoon of November 22, 2023, a verbal altercation outside the Charles W. Dickinson Transportation Center in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, ended in the death of 39-year-old Jeremiah Waylon Hawkins. The male victim was shot in the face at close range and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
A 15-year-old male, Thomas Niarhos, was immediately taken into custody after being detained by eyewitnesses at the scene. The weapon, a. 40-caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic firearm, was recovered at the scene and was later determined to belong to Niarhos's father. The incident, which was captured on surveillance video, showed Niarhos seeking out Hawkins before the two engaged in an argument. During the confrontation, Hawkins reportedly swung a tire at Niarhos, who then fired the weapon.
The motive for the shooting appears to stem from accusations made by Niarhos that Hawkins had sexually assaulted his girlfriend months earlier. Witnesses reported hearing Niarhos accuse Hawkins of the assault before the shooting. After the incident, as police took him into custody, Niarhos allegedly shouted that Hawkins was a rapist. It was reported that the alleged sexual assault had been reported to the police in July of that year, but the girl's family had declined to press charges.
Thomas Niarhos has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, firearm possession by a minor, and possessing an instrument of crime. He is being held without bail at the Montgomery County Youth Center. In February 2024, a judge ruled that Niarhos would face all charges in county court. Hawkins's family has denied the allegations against him, stating they believe he 'died over a lie.' While Hawkins had experienced homelessness in the past, his family clarified that he was not homeless at the time of his death and had recently moved into an apartment.
