In the late summer of 2019, a violent altercation in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, tragically cut short the life of 31-year-old Otis Harris. The fatal encounter unfolded on the morning of September 23rd, on Scott Street, stemming from a physical dispute that did not initially involve Harris. The chain of events began when Harris's nephew, Rayshawn McKay, was involved in a fight with another man, Armani Cortez Rhedrick.
Following the altercation, McKay returned to his nearby home, visibly
injured, and informed his uncle of what had just transpired. Harris, upon learning of the incident, went outside to investigate the situation. Shortly after he stepped outside, witnesses reported hearing the sound of three gunshots. Harris was struck by multiple shotgun wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. The autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was homicide resulting from these wounds.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, witnesses observed the suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Armani Cortez Rhedrick, fleeing the scene. He was seen carrying a long gun, which was wrapped in a blanket, before getting into a silver Hyundai sedan and driving away. The proximity of the shooting to Barth Elementary School prompted a lockdown of the school as a safety precaution, as children were arriving for the day.
A joint investigation was swiftly launched by the Pottstown Police Department and Montgomery County Detectives. Their efforts quickly led to the identification and arrest of Armani Cortez Rhedrick. He was taken into custody and charged with a slate of serious offenses, including First-Degree Murder, Third-Degree Murder, and Possessing an Instrument of Crime. Due to the nature of the charges, bail was not set, and Rhedrick was remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility to await his court proceedings. Following his arrest, a preliminary hearing was scheduled. Rhedrick was ultimately convicted on charges of First-Degree Murder and other related offenses for the death of Otis Harris.
