On June 27, 2023, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, 38-year-old Derek Anthony Mayo was fatally shot during a child custody exchange. Mayo, a resident of Parkesburg, had accompanied his girlfriend to pick up her 12-year-old daughter from her ex-boyfriend, Kevin Morgan. An argument ensued between Mayo and Morgan, during which Morgan allegedly drew a firearm and shot Mayo once in the chest. Mayo was transported to Pottstown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
