In the winter of 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the late-night quiet on South Main Street in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, leaving a scene of chaos and tragedy. When the sounds of the shots faded, 31-year-old Maurice Chapman and another man, Damian Thomas, lay dead from their wounds. A third man was also seriously injured in the violent encounter that unfolded just after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 30th.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a single suspect, 21-year-old Jayshawn Malik Johnson, also of Wilkes-Barre. Investigators identified Johnson as the alleged shooter, and he was subsequently charged with multiple felonies, including criminal homicide and aggravated assault. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Johnson fled the area, prompting a manhunt that extended beyond the borders of Pennsylvania. He was considered armed and dangerous by law enforcement.
Less than a month after the fatal shooting, U.S. Marshals located and apprehended Jayshawn Johnson in Miami, Florida. He was extradited back to Pennsylvania to face justice for the deaths of Chapman and Thomas. Following his return, Johnson was arraigned on the homicide charges and held without bail. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in a subsequent trial, Jayshawn Malik Johnson was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder for the killings of Maurice Chapman and Damian Thomas, in addition to a conviction for the attempted homicide of the third victim. For his crimes, Johnson was sentenced to serve two consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole.
