In the early morning hours of February 9, 2022, a tragic event unfolded in a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania home that claimed the lives of 29-year-old Meredith Greene and her fiancé, Tyler Thames. The violence that erupted on Liberty Street not only ended two lives but also left a family and community in mourning.
Meredith, a mother to two young daughters, ages six and seven, was known for her vibrant personality and her talent as a stage actress.
She was a devoted mother and a beloved daughter, sister, and friend. Her life, full of promise and dreams of furthering her acting career, was cut short in an act of brutal violence. The attack occurred at the home of her mother, former Harrisburg City Councilwoman Sandra Reid.
The perpetrator was identified as Meredith's brother, Gregory Gerrod Greene Jr. In a fit of rage, he fatally shot both Meredith and her fiancé. The violence did not stop there; he also attacked his two young nieces, Meredith's daughters, with a knife, though they fortunately survived their injuries. Another of his sisters, Brittonie Meredith, was also shot multiple times but managed to escape and alert police who were in the area on an unrelated matter.
Following the incident, Gregory Greene Jr. fled the scene, leading to a police chase that ended when he crashed the stolen vehicle into a school bus. He was apprehended and subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, burglary, and illegal firearm possession. In October 2023, Gregory G. Greene Jr. pleaded guilty but mentally ill to all charges. A judge sentenced him to two consecutive life sentences for the murders, ensuring he would spend the rest of his life in prison. He also received an additional 21 to 45 years for the other charges. The senseless act left a family shattered and a community grappling with the loss of a talented young woman and her partner.
