Annette Blount Lambright, a 31-year-old female, tragically lost her life on April 5, 1969, in a horrific outburst of violence on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, just east of Harrisburg. Her death was part of a shooting spree that shocked the nation, not only for its brutality but also for the identity of the perpetrator, her husband, Donald Martin Lambright.
The son of the well-known comedian Stepin Fetchit, Donald embarked on a rampage that would leave four people dead, including his wife, and injure sixteen others before he ultimately took his own life.
On that fateful day, for reasons that remain a subject of some debate, Donald Martin Lambright, armed with two carbine rifles, began firing at vehicles along the busy highway. Annette Lambright was among the first victims of this senseless act. The chaos and terror that unfolded on the turnpike also claimed the lives of Ignatius and Ruby Keenan, and Vincent Saitta, who succumbed to his injuries over a month later. The incident was officially ruled a murder-suicide, with authorities concluding that Donald Lambright was solely responsible for the carnage before turning a gun on himself.
While the official report closed the case, questions and alternative theories have lingered for decades. Lambright's own daughter, in a book published in 2005, challenged the murder-suicide conclusion. She, along with her grandfather, Stepin Fetchit, publicly voiced their belief that Donald may have been set up. Their suspicions were rooted in his reported involvement with the Black Power movement during a time of intense FBI surveillance and disruption of such groups under the COINTELPRO program. Despite these lingering doubts and the pain they represent for the families involved, no evidence has ever emerged to overturn the initial findings of the investigation. The tragic death of Annette Lambright remains officially attributed to the violent actions of her husband.
