On July 22, 2023, at approximately 1 a.m., 21-year-old Janaya Lopez was fatally shot near the intersection of South 16th and Chestnut Streets in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Officers responding to reports of gunfire discovered Lopez suffering from a gunshot wound; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lopez, a resident of Ronks in Lancaster County, was a mother of four young children, aged 6, 4, 3, and 6 months.
Her father, Jonathan Lopez, expressed the family's grief and the unexpected burden of funeral expenses, along with the responsibility of caring for her children. He described her death as a tragic loss to gun violence in Harrisburg.
According to Harrisburg Police, Lopez was with a group of individuals at the time of the shooting. Lieutenant Kyle Gautsch stated that there is no indication she was the intended target, suggesting she may have been an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire between her group and another. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Lopez's death. The Harrisburg community has responded with vigils and calls for an end to gun violence, mourning the loss of a young mother whose life was tragically cut short.
