In the early evening of February 23, 2022, in the Bon Air neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the life of 18-year-old Teron Williams was tragically cut short. Just after 6 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the vicinity of Reifert Street. They discovered Williams on Wilbur Street, suffering from a gunshot wound to his back. Officers on the scene provided immediate aid to the young Black man before he was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Despite the efforts to save him, Teron Williams succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led Pittsburgh police to two suspects, both 18 years old at the time of the incident. Tymair Cox of Brookline and Michael Morgan of Beltzhoover were arrested and charged in connection with Williams' death. The charges brought against them included criminal homicide and criminal conspiracy. Cox faced additional charges of carrying a firearm without a license and possession of a firearm by a minor. Both teenagers were taken into custody and held in the Allegheny County Jail.
During a preliminary hearing in May 2022, prosecutors argued that Cox and Morgan had acted together in the killing of Teron Williams. They presented evidence, including surveillance footage, which they claimed showed the two teenagers in a silver Nissan Rogue at a gas station before the shooting. The prosecution alleged that the video then showed a person they identified as Cox firing a gun in Williams' direction. After the shots were fired, the gunman was seen running along Onyx Avenue before being picked up by the Nissan, which prosecutors believe was driven by Morgan. An autopsy confirmed that Williams had been shot in the back. Based on the evidence presented, a judge ordered both Cox and Morgan to stand trial for the murder of Teron Williams.
