In the Hill District of Pittsburgh, on the morning of March 22, 2022, 45-year-old Tiwand Hill was found shot to death inside an apartment unit in the Bedford Dwellings Apartment Complex. A 911 call shortly before 8:30 a.m. alerted police to the shooting in the 2400 block of Bedford Avenue. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Mr. Hill, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The news of his death, just days before he would have turned 46, brought family and friends to the building, where they gathered in grief.
The initial investigation left police without any immediate suspects. A local business owner who knew Tiwand Hill, having coached him in little league baseball, described him as a 'very nice man' and lamented the senseless violence that had taken his life. The community was left shaken by another act of gun violence in their neighborhood.
Months later, a breakthrough was made in the case. On August 12, 2022, the Pittsburgh Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit, along with the U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force, arrested 32-year-old Robert Freeman in connection with Tiwand Hill's death. Freeman was subsequently charged with criminal homicide and carrying a firearm without a license. Following his arrest, he was placed in the Allegheny County Jail.
