Leonard Rudolph Ruppert III, a 17-year-old male of German descent from Hamilton, Ohio, tragically lost his life on March 30, 1975. Leonard was one of eleven victims in what became known as the Easter Sunday Massacre. The perpetrator, James Urban Ruppert, Leonard's uncle, fatally shot his entire family in their Hamilton home. The massacre claimed the lives of Leonard's parents, his grandmother, and his seven siblings, ranging in age from 4 to 17 years old.
James Urban Ruppert, aged 41 at the time, was arrested and charged with eleven counts of aggravated murder. During the trial, Ruppert was found guilty on two counts of aggravated murder but was declared not guilty by reason of insanity on the remaining nine counts. He received two consecutive life sentences and was incarcerated at the Allen Correctional Institution in Lima, Ohio. Ruppert passed away in 2022 while still in custody.
The motive behind the massacre was reported to be Ruppert's feelings of neglect and resentment towards his family, particularly his brother Leonard Jr., who he felt received more affection. Ruppert's troubled life, marked by familial tensions and personal struggles, culminated in this tragic and violent act.
